Abbey Strand Apartments at Holyrood in Edinburgh is a royal-owned property. It has recently opened nine serviced apartments following a two-year-long renovation of the building.

The tenement building, parts of which date back to 1490, is located opposite the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament at the foot of the Royal Mile.

In medieval times the building was an almshouse with accommodation for the poor. In the 16th century it was a weapons store. By the 18th century it had become a brewery and a tavern as well as being home to a brothel-keeper. By the 19th century the building had become a sanctuary for debtors. In the 1850s the skeleton of a child was discovered in one of the walls of the building.

By the early 20th century the building had 'cleaned up its act’ and had become a restaurant, a confectioner, a tavern and a spirits merchant.

The new apartments now feature historic fireplaces and original stone walls, blended with all the prerequisites of a 21st century aparthotel but with “quirky windows".

The Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) has secured approval for a new hotel plus a hotel school which will be located in the Haymarket area of the city.

The new hotel will be operated by EICC under a franchise agreement with Hyatt Hotels. It will be a four-star hotel with 362 bedrooms.

The new hotel will address conference demand issues for the EICC - which has hosted almost 1.5 million delegates at the conference centre venue since it opened in 1995.

The hotel school will be an integral part of the hotel development. It will address recruitment challenges faced by the hospitality industry in Scotland.  It will offer a career path for students and trainees as well as a pipeline of qualified people for Scotland’s leisure and tourism industries.

The new hotel development will occupy one of the most accessible locations in Edinburgh city centre, with excellent road and rail connections as well as good access to Edinburgh International Airport.

The Old Coastguard was forced to close following a major fire in June 2019.

The Old Coastguard was once a lookout station for the local coastguard – hence its name. It now has fourteen bedrooms, nearly all looking out over the sea, with views to St. Michael's Mount and the Lizard.

There is a dining room and outside terrace in a tropical garden that slopes down to the harbour wall.  Bedrooms are ‘homely’ furnished with bathrobes, blankets, a Roberts radio, tea- and coffee-making kit, homemade biscuits and books to browse.

The restaurant and bar open this week with the accommodation opening on 24th March 2020.
